  • ABOUT Kartick Chandra Pyne

Born in 1931 in Kolkata, Kartick Chandra Pyne was an artist ahead of his times. He completed his diploma in Fine Arts from the College of Arts and Crafts in Calcutta. His work style was very different from the style used by his contemporaries. At a time when realism was the norm, he derived his aesthetic from Post Cubistic European Idiom. As an artist, Kartick Chandra Pyne’s work was more metaphorical than real. His use of colour was based on what the colours meant to him, rather than what the colours themselves represented. Pyne was inspired by artists like Fernand Leger, Marcel Duchamp and Joan Miro.

Over the span of his long and successful career as an artist, Kartick Chandra Pyne has had several solo shows in India. Some of the international exhibitions he has participated in include 100 Years of Modern Art, held in the Fukuoka Museum in Japan in 1979 and the exhibition of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations in Bangladesh, held in 1992. Kartick Chandra Pyne is the elder brother of acclaimed modernist painter Ganesh Pyne.
