Description

Synonymous with the culture of Bhutan, Bhutanese masks take on a spiritual significance. They are worn by monks during religious dances as well as regular folks during festivals and special occasions.

The art of mask-making is a laborious one and many artisans are trained at a young age to execute the complicated design. It usually involves a long process where the native wood is dried for many months, after which the rough form is shaped and finally carved skillfully.

This imposing mask features Garuda, the legendary bird-like creature that is the vahana of Lord Vishnu. Featuring carved eyes, rounded cheeks, elaborate eyebrows, ears and hair, the mask is a fine example of the talent of Bhutanese artisans. The mask comes with a detachable stand that makes for an easy display.
