Born in 1953 in Kanpur, India, Ashok Bhowmick is an acclaimed senior artist known for his cross-hatching technique. He graduated from Kanpur University in 1973. A multi-talented artist, Ashok also sculpts and writes in addition to painting.
Through his predominantly figurative art, Ashok Bhowmick explores themes of personal and societal significance. For instance, the Coal Mine Series is inspired by reflections on the subhuman conditions and poverty faced by coal-workers, whereas the Jai Ho Series and the Bull Series are inspired by emotions and thoughts recognised by individuals universally. A recurring subject in his artworks is the bird.
Be it paper or canvas, small or large, Ashok fills the spaces with his meticulous cross-hatching rendered with pen and ink. He creates the darker spaces with a dense mesh of lines, whereas lighter areas are achieved through a controlled arrangement of lines. It is a matter of utmost dedication that has made his paintings distinctive and his cross-hatching his inimitable signature.
