  • ABOUT Pattachitra Art

Pattachitra, literally translates to ‘patta’ meaning cloth and ‘chitra’ meaning picture or painting. Pattachitra is a traditional artform from Odisha (Orissa). Dating back to over a thousand years, it is one of the most well-known traditional artforms in India. Pattachitra paintings are characterised by their vivid yet simple imagery that borrows from the murals seen on temples in Odisha. Depicting mythological scenes, typically those pertaining to the Jagannath and the Vaishnava sect, Pattachitra paintings are painted by traditional painters or chitrakaras, who follow a very strict and disciplined approach to their practice.

Pattachitra paintings are typically done using vegetable and other natural dyes which are made by the artists themselves. Visually stunning, the intricate artworks are painted on cloth canvasses that are specially treated until their surfaces acquire a leathery texture. In modern times, the artform has adapted to newer mediums such as paper, but the traditional subjects and use of colour in the artform remain intact.
