Description

The Maasai (Masai) are an ethnic group that inhabit large parts of Kenya and northern Tanzania. Even today, they continue to lead lives that are far removed from the rest of the world, following age-old customs. Largely nomadic in nature, the life of the Maasai people centers around their cattle, which is their primary source of food. The measure of a Maasai man's wealth is in terms of cattle and children.
This sculpture of a figure holding a child is an original Maasai collectible, most likely from the 1960s or 1970s. Made using indigenous African wood, it has its origins in Kenya. The male figure has elongated features, and appears to be seated on a child's figure.
