Description

Most people spend a lifetime trapped within their realities or their expectations - in a battle of "what is" and "what we want". It often seems impossible to get out of the loop, and one can see so many others stuck in the same dilemma. Is there an escape nearby, that our eyes are missing? Can clearing some space within our mind and soul, help us achieve peace?

This artwork is part of the Maati series by Ashu Gupta, where she depicts human emotions while highlighting the humble ‘matki’ (earthen pots made of maati or mud), as the hero. Humans and the matki, both eventually return to Mother Earth at the end of their lives. Drawing parallels between ‘us’ and the matki, the artist has portrayed different facets of human life in this series of artworks.

  • ABOUT Ashu Gupta

    Ashu Gupta is an emerging contemporary artist whose practice is an exercise in introspection. A graduate of the National Institute of Fashion Design in Raipur, Ashu also holds a certificate from London’s Royal College of Art Contemporary Art Summer School. She developed her artistic practice through experimentation with pattern making, allowing intricate motifs to slowly emerge as larger forms. Working predominantly with pen and ink, Ashu uses hundreds of thousands of repeating patterns and stippling in her work. In recent times, she has started experimenting with other techniques such as paper piercing and thread work, which are extremely challenging to execute. Ashu’s deeply layered, mostly black and white compositions offer the possibility of a new interpretation with every glance. Her subjects are always emphasized, with nothing to distract from the beauty of her stunning pieces.

    With an artistic style that is both distinct and confident, Ashu’s works have been collected by seasoned art collectors, in what are still the early years of her professional journey. Ashu has participated in several group exhibitions across India, and also held solo exhibitions at Gallery Sublime, Bangalore in 2017 and at Artisera in August 2020 and August 2022. She has been nominated for the prestigious Lalith Kala Academy Awards (2016-17 and 2017-18) and the 2017 Bombay Art Society Awards. The artist lives and works in Bangalore.
