  • ABOUT Ramananda Bandyopadhyay

Born in 1936 in West Bengal, Ramananda Bandyopadhyay’s art can be described as lyrical and romantic. A representative of the Bengal School of Art, Bandyopadhyay graduated from Viswa Bharati University, Santiniketan in 1957 with a Diploma in Fine Art. His paintings are influenced by those of Nandalal Bose.

A strong religious influence in his upbringing influenced Bandyopadhyay’s choice of subjects, and so, mythology forms a large part of the narrative in his art. He is also known for paintings that depict the lives of average middle-class Indian families, infusing in them, a rare grace and beauty. A feature that ties Bandyopadhyay’s repertoire together is his use of colour - red, brown, green and white are consistently applied.

Ramananda Bandyopadhyay has been awarded the National Academy Award by the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, four times between 1961 and 1980. He was also awarded the Abanindranath Puraskar by the Government of West Bengal in 2000.
