Description

This piece dating back to the early 20th century, is a rare, uncut pair of large bags or Mafrash, woven with a mixture of kilim (flatweave) and pile sections. The large crabs or spiders within octagons represent protection from evil spirits.

Tribal bags were made by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes from Western and Central Asia for utilitarian and decorative purposes, usually with the same techniques and styles that they used for weaving rugs. Typically, women made the pieces without a set design in mind during the weaving process, which resulted in the variations in the patterns, and the irregular shapes. These “perfect imperfections” are the delicate nuances that add to the beauty of each one-of-a-kind handwoven piece.

The bags were used by tribal people for transporting goods when they migrated. They also served as storage containers within the tent. Some bags were meant to carry specific items, such as bedding, salt, etc.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Do not use any harsh brushes to clean the rug or carpet. Soft brooms can be used on a regular basis for cleaning. You can also vacuum regularly to keep dirt from getting trapped in fibres. If a spill occurs, blot immediately, but do not rub the stain. Expose the rug or carpet to the sun for some time if it gets wet. Rotate the rug occasionally to equalize wear. Use protectors under the legs of heavy furniture to avoid flattening and piling. If a thread comes loose, do not pull on it; instead, trim gently with scissors. Periodic professional cleaning of rugs and carpets is recommended.
