Background History:
‘A fascinating photographic record of the British Raj celebrating the "wise rulers and loyal officials" who "stepped in and produced order out of chaos" in colonial India. The text is divided into sections profiling Indian and British officers in the states of Gwalior, Indore, Bhopal, Malwa, Bhopawar, Bundelkhand, and Baghelkhand, with a biography and photographic portrait of each man dressed in finery, sometimes pictured with family members. The author, whose profile is included, was agent to the Governor-General in Central India.’
Charles Stuart Bayley (1854-1935) also published ‘Chiefs and Leading Families of Rajputana.

Condition:
Good condition. Oblong book bound in publisher's maroon morocco, title in gilt on front cover, rebacked in matching maroon leather.
