Description

This is a rare first edition (1859) of the ‘Recollections of a Winter Campaign in India’ with a facsimile signature of the author Captain Oliver J. Jones, R.N. There are also fifteen sepia lithograph views, costumes and plates, with tissue guards, and two plans. These illustrations are lithographs taken from the author’s sketches. Published in London by Saunders and Otley, Conduit Street, Hanover Square, the book details the ‘Relief of Lucknow’ during the first war of Independence in India. It is a first edition, presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper: to E.J. Watson with the Author's compliments.

Background History:
Military books became popular with the European public in the early 19th century. Unusually, this book is written from the perspective of an ‘observer’, as Captain Jones in fact served in the navy and the account is from a year off he spent travelling/volunteering in India.

Condition:
This book is in good condition with some foxing on a few pages, and the second illustration torn on the outer edges of the page. It features modern half calf morocco leather covered boards.

Note: The cover/binding on the book was modified, and is not the original. The word 'Campaign' is spelt incorrectly on the book cover as 'Campain'.
