  • ABOUT Bipin Goswami

Born in 1934, Bipin Goswami was a renowned Indian sculptor who graduated from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Calcutta in 1956, with a Diploma in Sculpture and Modelling. He was fascinated by human figures from the very onset of his career. Bipin’s individualistic and stylized expression of the human form, which at times assumed archetypal shapes, made him an outstanding artist. In the words of art historian Prasanta Daw, “Folk and naturalism blend in his work. He was fascinated with Kalighat pata painting, especially for their naturalism, mass and volume. He never followed reality, preferring instead to come up with his interpretation that was a stylized distortion of reality.” Bipin’s works showed his mastery of surface, contour, texture and perspective.

Soon after graduating from college, Bipin Goswami started teaching at the Indian College of Arts, Calcutta, from where he won a scholarship for a course in Yugoslavia, where he mastered the art of bronze casting. He returned to India in a few years and continued teaching at various esteemed institutions across India. Bipin worked as a guest artist at Lalit Kala Akademi, transferring works of the great artist Ramkinkar Baij in bronze.

His works have been exhibited in several solo and group exhibitions and are part of permanent collections at the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi and Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata. Bipin Goswami passed away in 2019 at his residence in Kolkata.
