Description

This artwork is part of a series by Ashu Gupta titled “Dialogues”, that depict a range of emotions, ideas, inner thoughts, and feelings. The contemporary artist chooses different subjects, delving into their consciousness and bringing to life their internal dialogues. Showcasing breathtaking detailing in her work, Ashu uses the intricacy of her chosen techniques to make a poignant statement about the complexity of human thought, dreams and desires that are often unspoken.
“Childhood” depicts the internal world of a child when they are at their most calm and contemplative: on a swing. The artwork was born of a free-writing exercise that Ashu conducted with a few children, in which she asked them to write down whatever came to mind. Ashu attempts to reflect the largely positive, but often eccentric thoughts that the children shared, through an explosion of colour that is rarely seen in her artistic practice. In so doing, she hopes to celebrate their creative spirit, and the confident vulnerability with which children share their internal narrative. In addition to a carefully rendered multi-coloured text, the work also sees stippling and circle patterns on the figure.
  • ABOUT Ashu Gupta

Ashu Gupta is an emerging contemporary artist whose practice is an exercise in introspection. A graduate of the National Institute of Fashion Design in Raipur, Ashu also holds a certificate from London’s Royal College of Art Contemporary Art Summer School. She developed her artistic practice through experimentation with pattern making, allowing intricate motifs to slowly emerge as larger forms. Working predominantly with pen and ink, Ashu uses hundreds of thousands of repeating patterns and stippling in her work. In recent times, she has started experimenting with other techniques such as paper piercing and thread work, which are extremely challenging to execute. Ashu’s deeply layered, mostly black and white compositions offer the possibility of a new interpretation with every glance. Her subjects are always emphasized, with nothing to distract from the beauty of her stunning pieces.

With an artistic style that is both distinct and confident, Ashu’s works have been collected by seasoned art collectors, in what are still the early years of her professional journey. Ashu has participated in several group exhibitions across India, and also held solo exhibitions at Gallery Sublime, Bangalore in 2017 and at Artisera in August 2020 and August 2022. She has been nominated for the prestigious Lalith Kala Academy Awards (2016-17 and 2017-18) and the 2017 Bombay Art Society Awards. The artist lives and works in Bangalore.
