Born in 1989, contemporary artist Digbijayee Khatua hails from Kendrapada in Odisha, and currently resides and practices art in Delhi. A shift from rural to urban, Odia to Hindi, small town to large metropolitan - the artist’s mundane realities changed enormously, and to this he credits most of his conceptual development and modified art techniques. Cityscapes and elements of urbanity are eminent in his works. He expresses with watercolours in a layered dialogue, to accentuate existential depths within the city. Interestingly, his works do not lose aesthetic pleasure in the otherwise grim realities, thereby retaining a subtle yet striking visual allegory.
Across Digbijayee's work, there are characteristic clean lines and bold, angular, graphic shapes. Many of his works feature paper cuttings. There is a simplicity in the everyday landmarks he depicts, that lends each work a certain recognisability and familiarity. One can find small inconsistencies in his artworks, confirming they are unique, human creations. Digbijayee works against the narrative of ‘perfected’ images that are commonly saturated into our everyday experiences. Working with paper, he recognizes the duality of strength and the vulnerability of the material.
Digbijayee received a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts in 2012 from B. K. College of Art and Crafts, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha and a Master’s degree in Fine Arts in 2015 from College of Art, Delhi University. He was awarded the 62nd National Award, Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi, 2022, a gold medal by Prafulla Art Foundation, Mumbai, 2018, IPCA scholarship, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, 2016, and a Research grant scholarship, Garhi Studio, New Delhi, 2015. He has been a part of several prestigious art residencies including the Kochi Muziris Biennale, Post-Graduate Residency, Vagamon, Kerala, 2015 and the KHOJ Peers Artists and Critic-in-Residency, New Delhi, 2015. His work has been exhibited in India, Greece and South Korea.
