Description

First edition of Volume 1 of ‘Forty Years Of The Rajkumar College. An account of the Origin and Progress of the Rajkumar College, Rajkot.’ Prepared and abridged from the papers of the Late Chester Macnaghten, M.A. First principal of the College and other sources. 1870-1910. Compiled by H.H.Sir Bhavsinhji, K.C.S.I Maharaja of Bhavnagar. This is Volume 1 (INTRODUCTION) from a 7 volume set. Printed and Bound By Hazell, Watson & Viney Ltd, London; Aylesbury, in 1911.

Background History:
The foundation stone of Rajkumar College was laid in 1868. The institution was designed by Colonel Keating and was formally opened by the Governor of Bombay, H. B. Sir Seymour Fitzgerald, in 1870. The college was founded for the education of the princely order by the princes and chiefs of Kathiawad for their sons and relations.
Maharaja Rana Shri Bhavsinhji Madhavsinhji Sahib Bahadur (1867–1908) was the Maharaja of Porbandar belonging to Jethwa dynasty, who ascended the throne of princely state of Porbandar on 15 September 1900 and ruled till his death in 1908. Bhavsinhji was educated at Rajkumar College, Rajkot. Chester Macnaghten (1843-1896) was the first Principal of the Rajkumar College, Rajkot where he taught and influenced 170 royals of The Princely Order of Western India.

Condition:
Good condition. Text pages edged with red decorations. Top and bottom of spine, and outer part of both red silk covered boards damaged, with signs of water. Gilt titles and gilt decorations on fronts with bevelled edges. Rear board has gilt illustration of learned figure in robes with blind stamped decoration around edges. Inside - very good condition with frontis colour map of Kathiawar and fold-out map of Bombay Presidency. Large fold-out site plan of the College. Colour crest and coat of arms. Charts, Tables, tissue guarded full-page photos and drawings. Red marbled end pages.
