Description

First edition of “Familiar Butterflies and Moths” by W. F. Kirby F.L.S, F.E.S. assistant in zoological department, British Museum (natural history), and author of “European Butterflies and Moths,” “a handbook of Lepidoptera,” etc. etc. This beautiful book has eighteen special plates containing 216 illustrations in colour. Published in London; Paris; New York; Melbourne: by Cassell and Company, in 1901.These are fine chromolithographed plates. William Forsell Kirby (1844 –1912) was an English entomologist and folklorist.

Condition:
Fair condition in the original gilt-blocked cloth. Corners bumped. Some toning and foxing throughout. Colour plates have bled through to the facing pages. Plate IX has come loose from the binding, and is torn along the fold. Pate X is also loose from the binding torn along the fold, and at the bottom right corner. Pages 67-78 loose from binding, only held at base. Plate XVIII is loose from the binding but all plates complete. Some wormholes towards the front and back of the book, but these don’t affect the illustrations. Deaccession stamp at the end. Previous owner’s inscription at head of title by E. Kharegat.
